The sled represents the history of using sled dogs in Antarctica. New Zealand's Scott Base, located near the U.S. Station McMurdo, utilized sled dogs until 1986...then removed them permanently, as the Antarctic Treaty began to phase out the use of dogs for all participating nations. The last dogs were removed in 1993, with the British being the last ones.
